The Killen Creek Trail isn’t brutally steep, but it is direct as it climbs toward the massive mountain. The Killen Creek Trail starts near Killen Creek but only gets farther and farther from its namesake creek as it veers toward East Fork Adams Creek. In 2.5 miles you reach East Fork Adams Creek and meadows thick with lupines and huckleberries. This creek offers the first water on the route and the location of several campsites.

In 3.1 miles the trail reaches a junction with the PCT. A 1.0-mile-long spur trail continues up the mountain to popular High Camp beneath the Adams Glacier. If you have the time and the energy, don’t miss this side trip—see option below. Just above the camp the Adams Glacier tumbles down the mountain between the Pinnacle and the North Cleaver, grinding ever deeper into the massive mountain. These huge wedges and blocks of ice creep toward the high camp down one of the mountain’s steepest faces. Ragged pine trees grow in the volcanic soil, but they don’t grow very tall. The windswept trees spread out into rows, and they’re always facing downwind. To the north, the view of Mount Rainier and the Goat Rocks is eye-popping. Notice how the land south of Mount Adams is a high plateau extending all the way to the Goat Rocks.

To continue, it’s a short 1.0 mile east to Killen Creek Meadows. Killen Creek flows year-round. On its course down the mountain, it tumbles over several low-angled waterfalls and meanders neatly through the meadow. These meadows have it all—waterfalls, flowers, breathtaking views, and even a hidden lake. Reverse your path to get back to the trailhead, or go south on the PCT 1.5 miles past the junction with Killen Creek Trail (113) to Trail 112. Trail 112 descends for 1.8 miles through more meadows. These meadows aren’t as scenic as the Killen Creek Meadows, but they are bigger and more open. From the trailhead for Trail 112, walk about 2.4 miles on FR 2329 to get back to the Killen Creek Trailhead.
